“I love this picture because it captures her innocence.  Her natural angelic look was not posed, I simply captured her in the moment.”

by Jeff

“It’s a picture snapped on a sea saw with my niece Trinity. Very in the moment shot that just amazed me at the clarity of her eyes looking at the camera with a nice softening depth of field for the rest. Very minimal color correction needed at all and no depth of field changes at all. Just one of those photos that just stands out. Trinity loves to have her photo taken and this one stands out of all of them as my favorite.

by Karla

“I love the photo attached simply due to the circumstances surrounding it. My son (Gideon or ‘Gus’) was in SUCH a terrible mood, no one wanted to be around him. The fact that this shot was taken in the ONE SECOND that he was placated in the evening amuses me. It makes it even better that he has a look that says ‘I am not sure why this is working, but it seems to be. I am going to just go with it.’ ”

by Billie

“This is my favorite photo because I took it back home, in a small community called Bermuda, Alabama.  I now live in a city and this photo reminds me of a slower paced lifestyle, the fresh outdoors, and where wild berries grow.”

Vote, now.  Go!

P.S. Stay tuned for the FINALS on Monday and Tuesday.

P.P.S. Did you know that I’m on Twitter?  Fact.

Photo Contest Semifinals-Part 3 [CLOSED]

Dude.  DUDE!  You guys are so into this.  I love that!  But I’m not gonna lie…I can’t wait to get back to regularly scheduled programming so that I can discuss serious matters…such as last weekend’s beach excursion, update you on my NYR, and random conversations with The Hubs (which this time includes my father, my grandmother, lots of alcohol, and a “beached whale”).  I also may or may not have made a bit of artwork for BP while at the beach.  I may or may not have used their own oil to do it (don’t worry, I took pics).

I’ve tallied up the first two days of voting.  The winner of Round 1 is Jennifer!  And the winner of Round 2 is Heather!  And wow.  They certainly racked up the votes.  Puppies and butterflies.  Who knew?!?!

Ready for Round 3?  Get voting!  But first, here are the rules again:

  • You will see a new set of pictures each day, from now until Saturday.  Each day you can vote on your favorite picture.  If you have entered a photo, invite others to vote for you!
  • To vote, simply leave a comment with the name of the photographer.
  • One comment equals one vote, and please only vote once per day. *honor system people!*
  • And one more thing: Voting will only last 24 hours from the moment the entry is posted.  After that, all comments will be closed.
  • The winner from each round will go on to the Finals, which will be posted on Monday and given 2 days of voting time to pick the winner.

Spirit in the Sky by Laura

“This is a photograph of my best friend Stephanie. She and I have an obsession with going to random places (usually out in the desert) and taking millions of photographs. I was searching through my parent’s keepsakes and found an original polaroid land camera that my Grandpa had gotten when he was stationed in Indio, California during World War II. With that inspiration in mind, I wanted to take some pictures of Steph with the camera, but I just didn’t know what to do. We were standing out in the middle of Desert Hot Springs, California taking pictures on a windy day, and this photo just seemed to happen. I hope you enjoy it. I call it “Spirit in the Sky” :) .”

“The photo I’ve attached was taken about a month and a half ago at Bridal Veil Falls in the Columbia River Gorge (Oregon). The hubs and I were vacationing in Portland, and we ventured out of the city for some outdoors adventures. The Columbia River Gorge is home to some of the world’s most breathtaking views, including it’s many waterfalls. In order to get to this specific waterfall, we had to park our car and hike a bit of a distance (aka, me wanting to turn around about 30 times, because it was hot and my legs hurt). The trail took a sharp turn the right, and there it was. The most beautiful sight I’ve ever set my eyes upon. The pain in my legs disappeared, and I wasn’t hot at all anymore … this is what I hope Heaven looks like!

The water was roaring down the side of the hill … it’s the only sound we could hear. Although it was extremely loud, it was soothing. The mist created by the water hitting the base of the falls was almost indescribable. The sun reflected its way through the mist in every direction, and within the roar was so much calm. The whole scene was surreal, and I lost myself in that moment.

As we walked closer to the falls, we noticed the large rock in the left side of the image. Though it now sits off to the side of the falls, it used to be attached … over time, erosion caused it to split off and become it’s own being there in the middle of the scene. We were able to climb on top of the big rock, which gave us an up close and personal perspective of the fall. Here we were, 4 tiny little people, standing on this huge rock, while this rushing water is falling less than 50 feet from our faces. The mist was spraying, and it was hard to not feel the power of nature in my soul. To say it was refreshing was an understatement. The water below was the most beautiful color of blue-green I’ve ever seen. It was crystal clear and even though it was only feet away from the base of the falls, it was almost completely still in places, letting us see the life the lived underneath. In the middle of this entire scene was a lonely log. I took a moment to sit on that log and just soak it all in. It was here where I had that ‘moment’. You know … the moment in your life where everything makes sense?? The hubs and I have been debating whether a move across the country is in the cards for us. While sitting on that log, all signs pointed to yes. That was it. It was my life changing moment. I can’t describe the feeling in words, but something just came over me and calmed my soul. It was like the feeling you get when you know the first kiss with the love of your life is about to happen. Ya know?

I am sure this photo doesn’t evoke the same emotions from anyone else that looks at it, but for me … this photo is my future. This photo represents everything that the hubs and I are working for hard for. Every time I see it, I feel that ‘feeling’ again, and it warms my heart. Again, words can’t even come close to describing it … but I hope I’ve done an okay job.”

“This is my best photo because it was (a) taken with a point-and-shoot; (b) taken with significant zoom; and (c) not touched at all by photoshop or any other editing software. This is just how it came out!  I took it when I was in Santa Barbara for my soon-to-be cousin-in-law’s wedding.”

by Heather

“It is my favorite photo ever because it makes me remember that our relationship hasn’t always been (and isn’t just) husband and wife. We were friends first and that friendship is the very core of our marriage. Plus we both look young, happy, and like we’re feelin’ good!”

by Jenny

“I’ve been umming and ahhing over my favourite picture, and it just has to include two of my best people in the world, my brother and my niece.  I have better composed pictures, and artier pictures, but this just captures the sheer joy of the situation where my brother just lights up her world.”

Breaking the Curse by Theresa

“I don’t know if I can say it’s my best photo ever or even if it’s my absolute favorite – picking a favorite is just impossible. But this one, Breaking the Curse, is special. It embodies what I’ve learned about nature photography over the last few years: It’s all about perseverance. For this particular shot, I woke up well before dawn (we’re talking 4am) several weekends in a row trying to capture a great sunrise, and each time all I came home with was lost sleep. Finally, on the 6th or 7th weekend of forfeited sleep, I was rewarded with this fantastic scene. Every time I have a bad few weeks and feel myself losing motivation to get out there with my camera and keep trying, I look at this photo and remember that if I keep at it, it will all pay off eventually.”

“Pictured is mine and my husband’s smiling golden retriever puppy, Biscuit, at 2 months old, taken this past fall. October is my favorite month, and it was just a few days before Halloween.  We’d only had Biscuit for maybe 2 weeks at this point, and he was having the time of his life eating all the red and yellow leaves he could find.  I feel like this picture captures the vivid colors of fall, Biscuit’s sweet and silly nature and, well, just how much of a fluff ball he was then!”

by Kimberly

“I had SUCH a hard time picking a favorite, but I’m going to go with this one. I took it during a Civil War reenactment at the Erie Cemetery.  I was asked to take photos that day by a friend of mine participating in the reenactment.  I caught this moment during a quiet moment and have just loved it ever since!”

by Sherra

“This is my favorite because its simple. The expression is perfect and the eyes are full of life! I took this picture of my 6mth old just after Halloween almost 2 years ago. It was a spur of the moment photograph and the result is captivating. Little Jake turns 2 this Friday and his expressions still take my breath away.”

by Noelle

“Napa Valley. I took this picture while doing a wine train tour for my birthday in December 2008 (can’t believe it was that long ago). I love, love, LOVE this picture… it just has everything. plain and simple. The tree slightly blocking the sun, the vines, the road, and the mountains. It was such a gorgeous day and this picture really captures it in my opinion.”

That is all.  You may now follow me on Twitter.
