100th Post of Loveliness!

Wow!  I just realized this is post #100!  I haven’t been doing this long, so I must have a lot to say.  Anyway, in keeping with the Friday theme of positivity only, I decided to do this little thing I saw on my friend, Noelle‘s, blog.  Here goes.  And Happy Friday to all of you lovely people!

I am…just a girl.

I think…everyone should have a house on a mountain.

I should…be getting ready for work.

I dream…in very vivid colors.

I want…to be my own boss.

I know…how to sex an alligator.

I don’t like…debbie downers.

I smell…steamy hot coffee with cinnamon bun creamer.

I hear…The Today Show in the background.

I fear… bears.

I usually…don’t wash my hair.

I search…for my chapstick at least twice an hour.

I miss…my amazing great-grandmother.

I always…look for goodness in people.

I regret…nothing. I wouldn’t be where I am today without the actions of my past.

I wonder…what life would be like without republicans.

I crave…cheese 24/7

I remember…to say please and thank you.

I need…to fold my laundry.

I forget…people’s names.

I feel…more in love with The Hubs every single day.

I can…eat more than you would think possible for my size.

I can’t…function without a snack every 2 hours.

I am happy…as much as possible…which is a lot.

I lose…my patience with children very quickly.

I sing…when I’m happy (see “I am happy…”).

I listen…instead of waiting to speak…no, that’s actually not true.  But I wish it were.

I shop…for pre-owned clothing, in my humble attempt to make the world a less wasteful place.

I eat…with me elbows in the air (watch out if you sit next to me).

I love…smiling, which releases endorphins in the brain which, in turn, make you happier.  You’re welcome.

The Nerd learns to sew.

The Mom-in-Law is a very patient woman.  And by patient I mean she puts up with the way that I learn, which is by watching, not reading.  She’s good at that kinda stuff because she was a teacher most of her life.  I love that she can read her “students” and know what learning style works best for them.  For me, you have to show me how to do something before I can fully grasp the concept.  Diagrams and written instructions are the devil for me.

See that vintage pattern above?  Its from, like, the 50s or 60s.  And it was ONLY $1 at that time!!!  Patterns are freakin’ ridiculous now!

Ok, so learning to sew and then eventually learning how to refashion used clothing are two huge goals I set for myself for 2010.  We decided to use a vintage pattern and some spare fabric that the MIL had on hand.  That fabric…well…its what she used to make the Dad-in-Law’s shower curtain.  Its like I’m wearing camo in his bathroom!

Look at that concentration!

The seam ripper and I…we became fast friends.

And here I am in the unfinished skirt!  I’m still working on the waistband and the hem, but it turned out pretty well!  I wasn’t sure if I would like the pattern, but with a tucked in black tank and a cardi, it will be perfect for the fall!

Next, I would like to make one of these dresses for attending summer weddings (click for a better view):

Which do you like best?  I think I will do whichever dress I choose in navy, because I’m in love with that color right now, and its very flattering without having to resort to basic black.  Thoughts?  Comments?  Suggestions?

Two words: ECLIPSE TRAILER!!!!!

My fellow Nerds, today was a special day.  Why?  Well, a few months ago there was a teeny tiny 10 second teaser trailer for The Twilight Saga’s third installment, “Eclipse”, which showed NOTHING!

About a month ago a new one came out.  I actually watched (suffered through???) Entertainment Tonight for about 2 minutes just to see the new, slightly longer trailer.  But Nerds, it was still quite the tease.

But today…today, my friends, Oprah finally got on the Twilight bandwagon and showed us the newly released full-length trailer!!!   I DIED!  There’s so much death and destruction and hottness….”Eclipse” looks nothing like the emo melodramatic shiz that took up the vast majority of “New Moon.”

Wanna see it???  Follow this link to Oprah’s Entertainment page.

Have fun, Nerds!

Happy Earth Day!!!

Happy Earth Day!  I’m going to make this short and sweet.  I want to challenge you today.  If you see a piece of garbage or litter on the ground…PICK IT UP!  And throw it away in an actual garbage can.  That’s all I’m asking.  Think about the difference we could make if every single person did that once a day.  Or better yet, if nobody littered!  Yeah, right.  If only it were that easy.

I hope you have a fantastic day enjoying this precious planet.  We wouldn’t be here without it.

In bloom

Cardi: Target;  Tank: Target;  Skirt: Thrifted;  Belt: F21;  Boots: Steve Madden Intyce

When: Monday, April 19, 2010

Why: Another typical Monday of errands and groceries.  Pretty much the only day I’m ever able to get an outfit put together for the ol’ blog.  I bought this skirt at Goodwill for $3 last week!  You should know that after this picture was taken, I changed from boots to my trusty gold flat sandals, which made me feel more comfortable in this outfit.  I actually really like this outfit, but I felt funny because its not the norm for me.  Plus it is the shortest skirt I’ve EVER worn without tights.  I’m just now starting to like me legs enough to show them off, but not even one year ago every skirt/dress of mine went to the knee or below it.  Now I’m hemming everything in my closet!  Oh, and this is the only floral piece in my closet right now, but I’m hoping that will all change very soon.

So what do you think of this outfit?  Should it be worn again or maybe worn a different way?  Because I felt silly and cute all at the same time.  Weird, I know.

P.S. I was completely aware that my skirt was wrinkled and I did absolutely nothing about it.  Call the fashion police!!!

Letters from The Nerd

Dear Veggies,

Thank you for sacrificing yourselves so that I may enjoy many lovely dinners.  You’re just so damn good, I can’t help myself.  Especially you, Avocado.  I’m quite addicted to you lately.  Tell your family to watch their backs.

Dear Neighbors,

You guys totes made our Friday night amazing!  Thanks for coming over and drinking bottle upon bottle of red wine with us.  Glad we could cook you some yummy food.  (And sorry for not having a pic of you, Lisa.)

Dear Boxwoods,

I hate you and you are a bitch to trim.  Please die so that I never have to touch you again.  Thank you.  Goodbye.

Dear Mama Mockingbird,

We apologize for almost cutting your nest of babies out of the tree.  We want you to know that we are pro-bird and would do nothing to intentionally harm the bird population.  You’re a damn good mom.  Keep up the good work!

Dear Childrens,

Thanks for always smiling and keeping your happy faces on, even when we (your parents) drag you out to the beach into 85 degree weather, tie you up to a tree, and then proceed to force you to get in the cool water.  Luckily you aren’t real children or we might have to answer to someone about tying you to a tree.

Dear Me,

You had a great weekend!  Good for you!  Remember to kick ass at ninja school tonight so you can graduate to the next, more bad-ass, belt level.

With love,

The Nerd

Showing some love.

I have been inspired by Twitch Vintage‘s “Five Things I Love Friday” posts and decided to do my own version.  From now on, I will post only positive things on Fridays.  Talk about a happy start to the weekend.  But no worries, I still have my hater/review posts lined up too.  Damn, I love trashing bags of douche like Nickleback and stupid products like the Shake Weight.  But there are two sides to every quarter folks.  (I have no idea where that little slogan came from, but I guess it works.)

So without further ado, here are some things I think are the absolute tops.

1. Homemade Guacamole – Seriously, I never ate avocados unless they were hidden in my california roll…until recently.  Now I could eat it for dinner.  I just mash one avocado with a little sea salt, pepper, lemon, and Sam’s “Fresh” brand salsa.  So.  Effing.  Good.

2. Flirty floral skirts (click on images for sources)

3. My Kuerig coffee pot – This one-cup thing is a dream come true.  Now I don’t have to wait for the kettle to scream at me just so I can drink instant coffee.  Now I have fantastic coffee first thing in the morning!!!

4. “Soldier” by Ingrid Michaelson – Ever since I saw her in concert a couple weeks ago, I’ve had this song on repeat in my car…and you should too!

HAPPY FRIDAY EVERYBODY!

Booyah!!!

I love blogging for many reasons, but one super awesome perk is meeting all of these wonderful people and making great friends from all over the country.  My first ever blog-friend was Joy the Baker in LA.  We clicked.  And by “clicked” I mean she helped me get my Buttercakes blog off the ground, so I sent her the cookbook my grandmother wrote.  She totes rocks my socks.

Then I met Kitty, from Fahrenheit 350.  Ahhhh, Kitty.  I love that woman.  She was living in Portland when I met her, but now she’s in Utah.  Such a doll.  We like to text each other during random life moments, just to chat.  We also send each other baked goods.  Jealous?  At some point in time, we are taking a vacation together.  At some point.

Next we have Deanna, the crafty lady that made the giveaway shirt.  She’s also in Portland, or in a suburb very near it.  I instantly fell in love with Deanna’s work over at Recycled Lovelies, so she started checking out my cakes on my Buttercakes blog…then one thing led to another….well, you can figure it out.  And isn’t she gorgeous?!?!  Good Lord.  This woman has two teenage daughters!  I was blown away when I found that out.

What is with all of the west coasties?  I’ve always considered myself an east coast kinda girl, but I’m getting along with everyone on the other side so well.  And guess what?!?!?!  There’s a new one!  Meet my friend, Booyah, from the blog Pantsless in Seattle.  First of all, she’s a damn trip.  I can’t stop laughing when I read her blog.  But she also leaves me novel-length comments that I just love so much.  Don’t tell anyone, but I always read her comments in the bathroom at work.  You wanted to know that, didn’t you?

This is what she said when I asked if I could blog about her: “Totally okay to blog about me! It fits in my theory that the more people mention my name on the internet, the sooner Keanu will find me and ask me to make him a man.”  Yeah…she has a thing for Keanu.  I’m going to pretend I don’t know that about her and keep reading her hilar posts anyway.  Jay-kay!  Its cool!  We all have our crazy celeb crushes…

Anyway, she pretty much rules, as do all of these fine ladies that I’ve met through the blogosphere.  Thanks for everything, ladies!
