the nerd goes biking…

Boyfriend shirt: Dillards;  Shorts: Old Navy;  Chucks: gifted;  Key necklace: self-made, found in grandparent’s old home

Bike: made by The Hubs

Occasion: A lazy bike ride on a beautiful Sunday afternoon.  Get a tour of Mobile, AL here.

I love the “boyfriend shirt.”  It has replaced the t-shirt, in my opinion.  Not only is it the most comfortable thing I own, but its a pretty stylish way to dress down.  Every girl needs a boyfriend shirt!

We have big oak trees.

The Hubs and I decided to do a little hometown exploring on our lazy Sunday afternoon.  It was quite nice, and I have lots of pictures to prove it.

While its no big secret that I can’t wait to get out of Alabama (currently in Mobile), this is such a beautiful place when you really take the time to see it.  I mean really SEE it.

For example, we have really huge oak trees…

…that line the streets of our old neighborhoods.

The camellias, redbuds, and japanese magnolias are sights to see.  They are so lovely.

I think I’m going to have to paint this japanese magnolia flower.

The old historic homes are incredible.  I wish I lived in one.

(Not that I don’t love our home, The Hubs, I’m just sayin.’)

We live right by the water (you can’t tell, but the water is to the right of The Hubs).  We practically live at the beach.  So its really easy to spend an afternoon at the beautiful gulf coast beaches without spending money on a hotel.  Just come back home!

The Hubs agreed to do a little posing for me…

…and then he decided to walk on the tracks…

…didn’t quite work out for him.  I couldn’t have planned this perfect shot!

And that, my little nerdy friends, is Mobile, Alabama.  Where do you live and what do you like most about it?

New Year’s Resolution: UPDATE

Happy Spring Forward Sunday everyone!  Remember my New Year’s Resolution?  You know, the one where I pledged to not buy any new clothes for an entire year?  Only pre-owned clothing, which includes thrift stores, vintage stores, and whatever I can find online (ebay, etsy, etc). Well, after only a couple of weeks and a few trips to the local thrift stores, I began to get really nervous.  Scared silly, actually.  I couldn’t find anything at all!  But a blogger that I admire, Second Skin, left me a comment encouraging me to wait 3 months before breaking down and quitting.  She made it sound like the used clothes universe would open up before my eyes, in all of its awesomeness.  So I have waited.  And I have succeeded…sort of.  Let me explain.

I have had some success in the used clothes department, which I am extremely excited about, but I have a confession to make as well.  See, I had gift cards to two separate stores and went ahead and spent them.  The ivory cardigan, blue and white strapless dress, and Gianni Bini sandals in the pic below are new merch.  Is that bad?  Spending a gift card?  Does that mean I’ve broken my resolution?  I also want to point out that the gray t-shirt is also new from Target.  I broke down and had to buy something comfy for work.  I meeean, I work at a bakery.  Can’t exactly dress fancy every day, know what I’m sayin’?

But I’ve also had some good luck from the thrift store gods. I’ve shown my two newest additions in this photo: a dark emerald green pleated maxi skirt (to be worn as a dress), and a chambray shirt (which I have been searching for FOREVS!).

And if I can’t find someone to make me my swim suit, I’m just going to have to break down and buy one.  Please help!!!

And one more thing…I need to address the reasons behind my NYR, because most everyone have gotten it wrong.  See, while its nice to save a few bucks every now and then, I did not do this to save money.  I’m doing this to be green and eco-friendly.  Why be a wasteful consumer when I can go find things that others view as junk and turn them into modern, fashionable outfits?  So that’s my goal everyone.  To be less wasteful.  To really think about everything that I have and how it can all be used in different ways.  Yes, this has motivated me to take a deeper look into my own closet, not just thrift store racks, and really build myself a wardrobe using things I already have.

So there you go.  This public service announcement has been brought to you by the nerd.  You’re welcome.

getting to know the nerd…

If you know The Nerd in real life, then you already know these things about me.  But those of you who are strictly on a read-the-nerd’s-blog basis with me…well, you think you know…but you have no idea.

The Nerd was a teacher last year.  Yep.  That’s right.  I, silly little Evan, taught high school biology.  Not the best year of my life, that’s for sure.  As a matter of fact, I hated it.  Worst.  Job.  Ever.

But I loved most of my students, and I was also the Scholars Bowl Coach.  So when I gave the principal my letter of resignation, I also let him know that I still wanted to coach Scholars Bowl…for free…because those kids are the bomb dot com.

And THAT, my friends, is the reason why I drove a busload of teenagers halfway across the state of Alabama for the State competition yesterday (because we are legit and we won the district competition).  It was so much fun!  Other than the fact that I was dead tired when I got home, the day was a complete success.  Oh we didn’t win, but we had fun and that’s what counts.  We made memories.  All those other teams are so serious.  They invest way too much in that silly little academic competition.  My students never once felt the need to give me an apologetic look when they got an answer wrong…because they knew I wouldn’t be judging them…as opposed to some other teams, who I felt bad for.  Have fun kids!!!  Geez!  You’re too young to take things so damn seriously!

So now, meet my goofy, adorkable, loving little group of geniuses:

This is what I found this morning…

The Hubs likes to change up our desktop background every now and then.  A couple weeks ago it was a picture of a tree in Gatlinburg, that I took of course.  Last week it was a painting of Venice by Monet.  Beautiful.

But this morning I woke up and was pleasantly surprised to find this:

Odd?

Yes.

100% awesome?

Absolutely!

I’m on a freakin’ bus.

Scratch that.  I’m DRIVING a freakin’ bus!  Say WHAAAAAAA?!?!?!?!

Tomorrow I’m loading 9 teenagers, myself, and all 10 of our big personalities into a bus and driving to Montgomery for the State Scholars Bowl Competition.

And they picked ME, the kid at heart, to drive the bus.  That’s cool.  I got this.

No really, I love these kids, and as their a-to-the-mazing Scholars Bowl coach, I couldn’t be more proud of them for winning the district tournament.  Watch out Patrician Academy.  Game on!

And just for a little visual, here’s what I drive around town on a daily basis:

And here’s what they’re making me drive tomorrow:

Yeah.  You’re scared too and you aren’t even coming!  Prayers would be appreciated.  kthanxbyeeeeee!!!!

And the most worn item of 2009 is…..

Cardi: Target;  Blouse: Etsy, vintage;  Flower pin: F21;  Skinnies: F21;  Wedges: Target

And the most worn item of 2009 is…

THIS SWEATER!!!  I’ve worn this sweater more times than I should admit to, but when you find something you love…well…you wear the hell out of it, am I right?  RIGHT???

And it will probably be pretty up there on the list in 2010 as well.  Just sayin.’  Get used to it.

I absolutely love this vintage blouse!  It has so many colors in the floral pattern, and would go great with pretty much any skirt and sweater.  I dressed it down today for running errands and whatnot.  The only thing that bugs me about it is the excess fabric at the neckline coming out and saying hello to the world.  I used to think I could just play it off as ruffle, but I was totes called out on that today.  Yeah.  Soooooo not ruffle.  I’m gonna have to fix that, pronto.

After pulling the Totinos pizzas from the oven and realizing I like the look of his pizza better than mine:

Me: “Come on!  Just trade one slice with me.”

The Hubs: “No way!  You made your choice at the grocery store…well, at the alter really.”

Me: “I chose my pizza flavor when I married you?”

The Hubs: “Exactly.”

While watching “Dumb and Dumber:”

The Hubs: “This should have won as Oscar.  Look at that acting!” (said as Jim Carrey tricked the barber by spraying ketchup from his neck)

While the beagle disgustingly licks his feet:

Me: “Ugh!  Why do you just let her do that?!?!”

The Hubs: “Because YOU don’t do it!”

Yep.  That’s all the time we have for today kids.  See ya next week with more convos with The Hubs.  Its sure to be a crowd pleaser!!!
