the nerd listens.

Thanks to everyone who commented on “the nerd wants bangs,” both here and on facebook.  You guys rock.

The votes are as follows:

Yes!  Get bangs!  ->5

No.  You will regret it.  -> 10

“Bangs are gay.”  -> 1

I know the overwhelming majority votes no, but I’m pulling for the “bangs are gay” underdog.  What can I say, I have a special place in my heart for losers.

Anyhoo, I have decided against bangs.  You guys are right.  I will come to regret it.  Its funny, because the urge was so strong yesterday that I actually took the scissors to a small snippet of hair at the top of my forehead.  I cut a pretty good (but thankfully unnoticeable) chunk, before throwing the scissors down, looking at myself in the mirror, and screaming, “Whoa whoa WHOA!  You stupid idiot!  What are you DOING!?!?!?!”

Like I said.  You can’t tell.

Thanks again homies.

the nerd wants bangs.

I am the stupid person that always does something drastic and equally stupid to her hair just when a bad haircut has grown out.  So this time, I’m seeking guidance on a very hairy matter: bangs.

Yes, I know that’s a crappy picnik job…my apologies.

I have very thick, wavy (go ahead, call it nappy) hair.  I also live in the deep south, where the humidity is the most common hair-hater around.  I’m still growing my hair out from a disaster a year and a half ago, in which my locks were cut so short, and I looked so horrible, that I somehow managed to wear my hair in the tiniest of ponytails until it grew out.

Now it is a little past my shoulders, and I still wear it up most days because I work at a bakery and I have to.  Which brings me to these bangs.  See, I think that bangs would look great with an up-do AND a down-do.  I think they will give a little spice to whatever hairstyle I may choose to wear.  Because lately, I’m in a freakin’ hair rut.

Click on picture for close-up image.

Now, if I decide on bangs, my next problem is getting my hair stylist to actually do it…because she knows me all too well.  The last time I asked her to give me some wispy side bangs, she cut, like, two strands, and it was perfect!  Haha!  She knows I don’t take change very well.  But with hair like mine, you either know how to cut it and deal with it, or you don’t.  I’m so lucky to have found someone who can not only deal with my hair….but also with me.

So….thoughts?  Comments?  Suggestions?  I need to know if I should pull the trigger or keep this gun in its holster…cause I’ve been wanting to fire this gun for about 2 months now.

HELP!!!!!

The Hubs’ status updates…

You’ve read Random Conversations with The Hubs.

And if that didn’t have you cracking up, I’m sure Random Conversations with The Hubs – Part 2 got you going.

And let us not forget The Greatest To-Do List OF ALL TIME!

But if you haven’t seen The Hubs’ status updates on facebook…well, you’re missing out.  Apparently he’s so hilarious that people go out of their way to text me or call me to tell me exactly what it said and proceed to laugh about it.

I’m pretty sure this is grounds for divorce, but I now give you those very updates that have cracked up many-a-fb-peeps.  Now you can understand what I live with.

Enjoy…or whatevs.

After the superbowl: “I’ve never had so many middle-aged women scream my name.  thank you Drew Brees.”

In regards to Mardi Gras: “[The Hubs] will be celebrating a combined Fat Tuesday and Ash Wenesday on Thursday.  It will be known as Fat Ash Thursday.”

At the dinner table (ummm….edited): “CBS puts a sex offender on tv and somehow I get in [effing] trouble for it.  That’s why when I was the age of the young kids I mentioned this around tonight, I had to sit at the kids table so adults could talk about adult [shiz]. whatever…ooo blah dee, ooo blah dahh”

Yeah…that last one’s gonna get me in loads of trouble.  This is how much I care about you, my lovely readers.  :)

Support Flower Awareness!

(photo courtesy of Hyperbole and a Half blog)

We don’t celebrate v-day in our hizzy.  Its just a made up holiday to make money for businesses, which is cool and all…for the businesses.

Well, that was my excuse, until I saw this blog, pooped my pants, and then got a grip.  My new anti-v-day campaign: “Support Flower Awareness!!!”  I, The Nerd, refuse to kill flowers for this made-up holiday.  Don’t get me wrong, its okay to murder innocent flowers to make a room look pretty, but NOT – I repeat – NOT to prove your love for someone.  Cause that’s lame-and-a-half.

P.S. Get over to Hyperbole and a Half RIGHT NOW!  Its the funniest blog EVER!

My sista is the big two-nine!

Aren’t these two of the most beautiful girls ever?  I like to refer to them as Sister #1 (Ryan – left) and Sister #2 (Emily – right).  Those ranks are based on age alone, not favorites…just so ya know.

Sister # 1is 29 years old today!  OH EM GEE!!!  What a gorgeous old lady.

Ryan has been such an amazing sister to me.  I mean, look at that lovely girl she produced!

She’s had an eventful and awesome year.  Ryan married Jacob in September and is now preggers with baby #3!!!  I’m so happy for her, Jacob, Lucas, and Gracie.

I LOVE YOU RYAN!!!!  Thank you for being the best big sister ever!

I will leave you with this photo I took of their sweet sweet family.

What to say when you talk to yourself…

Is it so wrong to think of myself as a beautiful person, inside and out?

Is it so wrong to look at my life and think, “Man, I’ve got it so good!”

No, as a matter of fact, its not.  It is, however, wonderful.

See, I was never the pretty girl.  I was never one to stand out in a crowd with my looks.  It was my silly personality that got me through.

I was never referred to as “the hot one.”  “Cute,” maybe, but “hot,” no.

And guess what?  I’m perfectly okay with that!  I love myself.  I love my body.  I love what I see when I look in the mirror.

Some people might call this self-absorbed or conceited, but in all actuality, it is none of those things.  Its all about feeling good about yourself.  Viewing your body and your style and your personality in a positive light.

I encourage you – nay CHALLENGE you – to look in the mirror every day for the next week and say these three words out loud to yourself: “I am beautiful.”

It will make you feel good about yourself, I promise it.

But keep in mind, this is free advice, so no money back guarantee if it doesn’t work.

Ladies, its all about knowing what to say when you talk to yourself.

Bye for now!

“I’ve got mad street cred now, fo’ shizzle!”

The title of this post just happens to be what the nerdy guy on the cover of the Urban Dictionary is saying into his little talk-bubble, or whatevs.

Whilst enjoying a few random minutes at the local B&N with my super friend, Maura, I happened to discover this little beauty.  It gave us about 5 minutes of fun.  I had no idea the Urban Dictionary was actually published!  Coolspice!

I decided to snap a few pics of random words that I thought were hilar.  Notice how they use every word in a sentence.  That sentence is the funniest part!

Yeah, cause a Funky Cold Medina will totes make me swoon.

Spiff was my favorite word in middle school.  Sooooo old school, yo.

Hoooooold up.  I need to back up off of this and sit my cup down.  I have frizzy hair.  I have a pasty complexion.  But grandma panties, I do not have.  Whew!  I’m in the clear.

And my personal favorite, because I’ve had one my whole life (and proud of it!):

This concludes your grammar lesson for today.  See you next time!

Playing Dress-Up

Boyfriend Shirt: Dillard’s;  Belt: Came with a separate Target dress;  Skirt: Thrifted;  Pumps: Thrifted;  Necklace: Claire’s

Since I am casually dressed most days for work, and do not feel that my ensembles are worth blogging about, I’ve decided to play dress-up every now and then.  I will put outfits together that I would wear on certain occasions.

This outfit is going out attire at its most comfy!  I love the soft oversized feel of the boyfriend shirt and the contrast between it and my little lace mini skirt (aaahhhh!  I wish you could see the lace!).  I could only wear this skirt out for a night on the town because its very short and very tight…but super cute nonetheless!

Those pumps are a perfect example of thrifting gone AWESOME!  I found these babies at Goodwill for $2!  They are perfectly fine, but the heels were a bit worn.  I decided to fix that with some black electrical tape for the time being.  You can’t even tell.  It blends right in!

So what would you wear out on the town?

the nerd recommends books…

I read.  A lot.  Its my favorite pastime.  I love to read so much, that after compiling my grocery list at a super bowl party (cause I was bored as hell), I contemplated grabbing a book off my sweet host’s shelves and diving right in.  Hence, the name “nerd.”

I have read over 50 books in the last year, and I loved most of them.  You can probably guess I have about that many to recommend.  I will keep this list to 10, and will try to keep the review to one or two sentences.  Think I can do it?!?!?!  Awesome.  Let’s do this.

*Warning: these are mostly teen fiction of the supernatural variety.

1. Mortal Instruments series (3 books, beginning with “City of Bones”), by Cassandra Clare – In my humble opinion, this series is better than the Twilight series, and I’m a HUGE Twilight fan, so that’s saying a lot.  This series has vampires and werewolves, angels and demons, magic and, my personal favorite, forbidden love.

2. Hunger Games series (3 books, beginning with “The Hunger Games”), by Suzanne Collins – This book is a mindblowing thrill ride.  Its unlike anything you’ve read…ever!  Every year, the futuristic country of Panem forces 24 teenagers (12 girls, 12 boys) to fight to the death.  This is a story of survival and love.  And you will not want to put it down!

3. The Gemma Doyle Trilogy (3 books, beginning with “A Great and Terrible Beauty”), by Libba Bray – British schoolgirls + magic = awesome.

4. Luxe series (4 books, beginning with “Luxe”), by Anna Godberson (You can read the first book for free here.) – Tales of young girls in New York’s high society at the turn of the 20th century.  Turns out they will do just about anything to get what they want….

5. “Hush, Hush”, by Becca Fitzpatrick – Kind of Twilight-esque, but nice to read, nonetheless.  Girl meets mysterious brooding boy.  Girl and mysterious boy fall in love.  Bad things happen because of it.  You know, the usual.  But very nicely written.  Me likey.

6. “Going Bovine”, by Libba Bray – The funniest book I’ve ever read, srsly!  Unlike the majority of my books, this one is narrated by a guy.  This particular guy has come down with mad cow disease and decides to go off on a crazy world-saving adventure with a mexican dwarf and a talking garden gnome.  I was hooked with the first paragraph.

7. “The Lovely Bones”, by Alice Sebold – Okay, this book is freaky.  I’m not gonna lie, it will disturb you.  You may even have trouble sleeping.  But it was a FANTASTIC book!  Please read before you see the movie.  You will understand (and expect) all of the movie’s freakiness that way.

8. “Graceling”, by Kristin Cashore – In this imaginary land, some people, called Gracelings, are born with special talents.  These talents can be as simple as swimming or archery.  Whatever their Grace is, they are the best at it.  They rarely fail.  But Katsa, the main character, is born with the Grace to kill.  Yeah, she’s badass.

9. The Underland Chronicles (5 books, beginning with “Gregor the Overlander”), by Suzanne Collins – Okay, so this is totally a children’s series, but one that I will read again very soon.  Its about a boy who discovers this strange land under New York City, full of giant baby-worshipping cockroaches, giant talking rats, and, incredibly, an entire society of humans.

10. Percy Jackson and the Olympians series (5 books, beginning with “The Lightning Thief”), by Rick Riordan – I enjoyed the Underland series so much, that I wanted to try another children’s series.  I’ve only read the first book and part of the second, but I was not disappointed in the least.  Can’t wait to see this movie!!!

Wow.  If you count all of the sequels, that’s a total of 27 books!!!!  So go get your read on peeps!
