Beautiful

I recently had the pleasure of taking senior photos for my former student, Hannah. I adore this girl. She’s independent and doesn’t care what anyone thinks. She is 100% herself. 100% real. For a high school student, that’s hard to come by. You rock girl! Thanks for letting me snap some shots of you. I hope you have a fantastic senior year!

Engagement

As you are probably well aware, I have not taken any photos in quite some time. However, my lovely friend Noelle has recommended me to her friend Andrea for an engagement shoot in New Orleans! Do you know how freakin’ excited I am about this?!?

I’m picturing streetcars…

And beignets…

And Audubon Park…

And the colorful building facades…

And antique shops…

And, of course, daiquiris!

For now, I’m a photographer.

If you caught my raging post last night about my career woes, then this might surprise you.  Not 5 minutes after writing that post, I took a step back, turned on Harry Potter  and the Half-Blood Prince, and realized what I need to do for now.  I have decided to really push myself into photography to see what happens.  I think I have a pretty good eye for photos and don’t ever want to wonder “what if.”  So its on, people.  It is so on.  (By the way, I should totally drop the F-bomb in my posts more often, cause I got more readers from that post than I’ve gotten in a while.  You guys make me sick.)

I can totally make this work between saving the wildlife and writing a book.  I got this.

So if you would like to book a photo session, please email me at anerdlikeme@gmail.com for pricing and info.  We got this!  For now, enjoy some of my favorite photos, taken by The Nerd herself (that’s me, in case you haven’t figured out that I sometimes write in 3rd person).

Photo Contest (and a prize!!!) [CLOSED]

As you know, I love taking pictures.  I love making things (and people) beautiful through the eyes of the camera.  That’s why I decided to have a photo contest, featuring all of my favorite internet peeps: YOU!

I will be accepting entries this week (see rules below) and you all will be voting next week.  The winner will receive this:

This adorable camera necklace has been donated to our contest by Marianne from the Etsy shop, ChinaCherie.  I absolutely adore her jewelry, especially her love of bird jewelry, and asked her if she would be willing to part with this necklace.  She said yes (in quite a few sweet words), and I’m super excited!  I’m even buying one for myself.  The winner can choose either a gold or silver necklace.

Here are the entry rules:

1) Send me your favorite photo (taken by YOU) in an email to anerdlikeme@gmail.com.

2) Include the following:

  • photo (any subject allowed, such as children, scenery, food, etc…just no nudity, please)
  • a brief explanation of why this is the best picture you’ve ever taken, or why it is simply your favorite (this will be on the blog, so make it good)
  • your name, email, and blog address (if you have one)

3) Entries will be accepted until midnight on Sunday, June 27.

4) Tell you friends about it so they can enter too!!!  The more the merrier!

I can’t wait to see your entries!

The pictures were taken by Wildflowers Photography and you absolutely HAVE to check out the shoot right here:

Dreams. I have dreams.

Picture taken at The Vatican, Oct 2009

The title of this post is a line from Brandi Carlile’s new CD.  Have you heard it yet?  Its effing amazing.

But it is also so true for me.  I have had dozens of career choices in my life.  When I was a child I wanted to be a choreographer, dancer, singer, songwriter, director, producer, etc….

But would you believe I never changed my major once in college?  I changed my career goal plenty of times, but I entered school as a biology major and graduated with a biology degree.  I’m pretty damn proud of myself for that one.  But am I working in the biology field???  NOOOOOOOO!  Of course not.  I just wouldn’t be Evan Davis if I stuck to one thing for the rest of my life.  I’ve come to accept that I will probably never have just one single, lifelong career.

So what am I doing now?  I decorate cakes at a fantastic local bakery.  Its so yums.  But the wheels in my mind are turning again, and I see a whole other future laid out before me: photography.  I know.  I know.  How crazy can one person be?  Ummm….hi.  I can be all kinds of crazy.  For reals.

So I decided to try my hand at photography this past Sunday and see how I do.  Thankfully, two fabulous women allowed me to use them and exploit their pictures just for practice.  Wanna see???  I bet you wanna see.

First, we have Noelle.  Her pictures were very organic and natural.  Even her outfit fit in with the wilderness.

Then we have Emily, a.k.a. Old Lady Hayes.  Emily is freakin’ hardcore, and I wanted to capture her in an urban setting.  Yes, she’s chain-smoking in these pictures.  Told you she was hardcore.

So what do you think?  Am I any good at this picture taking thing?
