Simple Gift Wrap & Tags

This gift wrap is so rustic and simple, not to mention extremely inexpensive. All you need is brown postal paper, green raffia ribbon and homemade Wordle gift tags in the color scheme of your choice. I chose the “moss” color scheme and inserted all sorts of lovely Christmas words, making sure to insert the gift recipient’s name multiple times so that it shows up nice and large. Happy holidays!

While snapping gift photos, I took this one of my tree in manual focus. I love how it turned out!

Four Years

Four years ago today, we packed up our prettiest clothes and headed to the country to tie the knot. There was cake. There was music and dancing. There was family. But most importantly, there was love. Magical, beautiful love.

Beautiful

I recently had the pleasure of taking senior photos for my former student, Hannah. I adore this girl. She’s independent and doesn’t care what anyone thinks. She is 100% herself. 100% real. For a high school student, that’s hard to come by. You rock girl! Thanks for letting me snap some shots of you. I hope you have a fantastic senior year!

Engagement

As you are probably well aware, I have not taken any photos in quite some time. However, my lovely friend Noelle has recommended me to her friend Andrea for an engagement shoot in New Orleans! Do you know how freakin’ excited I am about this?!?

I’m picturing streetcars…

And beignets…

And Audubon Park…

And the colorful building facades…

And antique shops…

And, of course, daiquiris!

Sweet Girl

I believe I’ve introduced you to Molly before. She’s our youngest – only four and a half lively years old. The old lady in the house is Sammie, our 11-yr-old mutt who doesn’t have a care in the world (unless there is thunder, of course). But today’s post is all about Molly.

Molly was one year old when we got her. You could say we rescued her. We were paid by a lovely family to take her off of their hands. They just didn’t have time for her. She wasn’t house trained and she wasn’t even spayed. That’s where the payment comes in. I refused to take her unless they paid us to have her spayed, so it all worked out. We all instantly fell in love, and Molly became a vital member of our family.

You can’t help but love this beagle. She is seriously too cute for her own good. Its impossible to stay mad at her for eating poop or tearing something up because she’s so damn easy on the eyes and the heart. And when she looks you straight in the eyes and howls at you? Geez! Kills me every time.

Unfortunately, Molly is in so much pain right now that she’s gone from “crazy adolescent” to “crippled old lady” in a matter of days. The Molly we once knew has taken on a completely different personality. It took over a week and two vet visits to learn that she has Intervertebral Disc Disease, which is essentially like arthritis of the spine. It is pretty progressed for a girl her age, but can be controlled with plenty of rest and anti-inflammatory meds.

I know it might seem silly to some people, but these girls are our children. They are essential to this family. They are our precious babies (well, technically Sammie is Drew’s step-kid since she came into the marriage with me, but I digress). It breaks my heart and makes us so sad to see Molly the way that she is. I just wanted to get that out there and explain to some friends and family what is going on. I would also like to thank Dr. Justin Mims for treating Molly with such care and devotion.

Now please look at these old pictures. Is she not the CUTEST thing?!?!?!

On Chinese food in Italy and getting pissed with The Brits.

One year ago today, we spent out last full day in Italy.  It just happened to be our best AND worst day there.  It also happened to be in Venice.

It started out as our worst day.  We were cold.  We were cranky.  The Hubs needed a water closet real bad, which made him even more cranky.  You know how it goes.  I also wasn’t getting my usual snack time in every day, which made for a very bitchy wife.  So what did we do after we left our tour of Venice early because we were in bad moods?  We separated.  Yep.  We split up…because we couldn’t stand to look at each other anymore.

Now, I know Venice is not a huge place, but you have to realize that we went in completely opposite directions without any way of getting back in touch with each other.  He didn’t even bring his phone.  But somehow, 30 minutes later, we crossed each others paths.  That’s when we decided to just take it easy the rest of the day and drink lots and lots of wine.  It was necessary…for our sanity.

St. Mark’s Square was flooding.

So I pretty much love this picture.  I had to lay on the ground like a crazy person to get the shot, but anything for art, right?

This picture is now on our credit cards.  Thank you, Italy!

By our last day, we were sick of Italian food tourist traps…so we got Chinese.  Obvi.

And it was really REALLY good Chinese.  And super cheap too.  It was nice to pay $4 for a lunch instead of $20.  Again, THANK YOU ITALY!

Notice how we look happier?

And this is when our bad morning was forgotten and our day completely turned around.  Hang those glasses up, friend.  Its gonna be a looooong night.

See?  MUCH happier.  THANK YOU ITALY!

That night, we enjoyed a lovely dinner with our new friends, The Brits.  We drank a lot at wine and champagne.  After dinner, we went to a bar and drank even more.  The next picture is about when I quit drinking, thank goodness, because we may not have made our plane home if I hadn’t.

Art time!!!

So next we went to an Irish Pub…in Italy….where we ran into…MORE BRITS!!!  Four more to be exact.

“I’m the coolest American EVEEERRRRRRR!!!”

And The Hubs got “pissed”.  I sat back and watched.  It was all kinds of awesome.

I’m so glad this last picture is frozen in time.  Let me explain.  See, shortly after this picture was taken, I had to escort the hubs back to the hotel.  This was difficult, as he was too drunk to walk up and down those many steps by himself, and every time we passed a door he tried to bang on it and wake everyone up.  He also felt the need to say, “Grazie!” to every Italian that passed him…at 2 in the morning.  Great.

By the time we got back to the hotel, we had all of 2 hours to pack up and get on a water taxi to take us to the airport.  I swore I wouldn’t sleep, but I did.  I fell asleep.  And somehow woke up with about 15 minutes to spare.

Once on the water taxi, The Hubs (still drunk) couldn’t stand the rocking of the boat, so he made his way off the boat and over to the edge of the dock…where he proceeded to “chuck up his guts,” as The Brits would say.  But we did make it to the airport and board our plane.  When we landed in Amsterdam 2 hours later, The Hubs woke up, looked at me with those bloodshot eyes and said, “Thank you.  Without you I would have never made it back home.”

And THAT, my friends, is love.

P.S. Thanks for following our trip to Italy!  It was a lot of fun and I’m glad I had the chance to put it all into words.

P.P.S. The Brits got engaged the day we left, and just got married two days ago!  Almost one year since they got engaged.  Awesome.  Congrats Chris and Mo!

On Bridges, David, and The Brits.

One year ago today, we woke up in Florence, Italy…on the coldest freakin’ day ever.  And all I had was a cardigan.  We only had half a day left in Florence, just enough time for another wonderful tour.

Sunrise on the Ponte Vecchio (the oldest bridge in Italy!) and my favorite picture of us ever.

This is the only picture we got of our tour guide.  She was very pretty and super sweet.  We were the only two on the tour, so it was a very intimate morning in Florence.

This was also the day we got to view Michaelangelo’s David.  It was…breathtaking.  Absolutely amazing.  We learned a lot about Michaelangelo that day, which was actually a recurring theme on our trip, especially at The Vatican.  Unfortunately, we can’t show you a picture of the actual statue of David because pictures are not allowed.  However, if you ever have the opportunity to go to Italy, please see David.  Please get a private tour and learn all about the creation of David and the works of Michaelangelo.  You won’t ever forget it.

The Duomo

Immediately after our tour, we hopped on yet another train and headed to our final Italian destination: Venice.  Let me just say that Florence may have been our favorite city, but we had the most fun in Venice.  Thanks to these two Brits we met on the train:

Meet Chris and Mo.  We hit it off immediately.  After Mo called The Hubs a “pervert” in the most adorable British accent ever, I knew this was a match made in heaven.  We made plans to have dinner the next night, our last night in Italy.  More on that tomorrow…..

The view from our hotel room.

For our first night in Venice, we just walked around and took it easy.  We ended the night with the most spectacular tiramisu I’ve ever had.

Tomorrow:  On Chinese food in Italy and getting pissed with The Brits.

From Rome to Florence

One year ago today, we woke up bright and early in Rome, took a 30 minute bus ride to the train station, and hopped on a train heading to Florence.  Florence was our favorite city.  It was just so laid back and chill.  No need to rush.  It was perfect.  I wish we had spent more that one night there.  We were barely there for 24 hours.

This hotel room is where we discovered La Roux on MTV Italy.  I couldn’t stop staring at the video.  I was like, “This woman…is amazing…”

We rented some bikes immediately after checking in.  This was the only city we could ride in, since Rome was way too dangerous and Venice has steps everywhere.  Plus, Florence is small and quaint.  Very bike friendly.

We followed a bunch of tourists up some steps and found this view.  Beautiful.

Michaelangelo’s David…a replica. The actual statue is now indoors and no pictures are allowed. This is where David originally stood, right at the front doors of the political building.

That night, we had a lovely dinner in a busy city square, complete with tent and heat lamps, thank goodness.  Then we bought some wine and retreated back to our hotel, where we probably woke everyone up because we were giggling so loud on the patio.  Oh well.  Good times!

Tomorrow is a doozie!

Rome, Day 3

One year ago today, The Hubs and I went to THE VATICAN!  You guys, this place was amazing.  I’m not catholic, I don’t even go to church, but I respect Catholicism so much more now.  Now that I’ve seen where where the Apostle Peter was hanged upside down.  Now that I’ve stood in Leonardo Da Vinci’s private quarters, looked out the very same windows he looked out, the windows that probably inspired him.  Now that I have looked down into the very passage that can take you to where every Pope has been buried, including the first Pope, Peter. It was amazing.

A couple of really cool facts before we begin our photo journey:

1) Did you know that no other building in Rome is permitted to be built higher than St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City?  There will never by skyscrapers in Rome, thanks to His Holiness.

2) If you were to spend one minute looking at every piece of art in The Vatican, you would be there for 12 years.  You read that right.  12 years.

*Side note: I couldn’t remember that statistic, so I googled it and found it on my old blog.  Awesome.

St. Peter’s Basilica in the background

Hall of Statues (The Hubs would like you to know that he took this picture.)

Recognize this guy?  Bill Clinton’s ancestor, maybe???

The Hubs’ feet on 2000+-year-old tile, which 30,000 people walk on every day.  Romans build things to last.

Super awesome watercolor of The Colosseum.  I want it.

Our British/Italian tour guide

La Pieta

St. Peter’s Basilica

As much as I would love to show you a picture of the Sistine Chapel, I cannot.  It is copyrighted to some super rich person, making them the only person who can take pictures in there.  So if you ever see a postcard or picture or anything of the Sistine Chapel, he got paid for it.  Crazy, right?  People were taking pictures, but I thought that was rude.  Security was also crazy about that, so I wasn’t about to try it.  My camera means more to me than one picture.

At the end of our last day in Rome, we decided to get a bus back to the hotel before history repeated itself.  We did not want to be stuck in the middle of night again.  So we went back, ate some more pizza, and went to bed early.

Tomorrow: FLORENCE!  My favorite.

Rome, Day 2

One year ago today, we spent our first full day in Rome.  This was my favorite day in that crazy busy city because we went to the Colosseum and the Roman Forum.  We had the best tour guide ever, because she was not just a tour guide.  She was a Roman-born archaeologist with a PhD!  Yeah.  She pretty much ruled.

(Stay tuned for trip and tour booking information at the end of our 7-day journey!)

Our first Metro ride!

The Arch of Constantine (Rome’s first Christian emperor)

Umbrella Pine Trees inside the Roman Forum.  Pine nuts come from these trees!  You can just pick them up off the ground and eat them!

Our amazing tour guide.

My feet on the 2000+ year old Via Sacra, the former main street of Rome.

Best. Lunch. Ever.  Pomodoro (tomato) panini in the heart of Rome.

View from the top of the Spanish Steps.

The Tiber River at sunset.

And finally, we went back to the Pantheon that night.  It was so magical, we just had to.

If I recall correctly, this may have been the night that we stayed out too late in Rome and almost didn’t get a bus home.  The Hubs absolutely REFUSED to get a cab, even though we couldn’t understand the bus schedule and almost all buses were done for the night.  It got bad.  At one point, when we were finally on a bus, the driver stopped at the bus station (leaving us on the bus) and got out.  We thought he just left us.  We were really freaking out.  But we got back to the hotel safe and sound!

Tomorrow: The Vatican!
