The J. Crew Challenge GIVEAWAY!!!

**UPDATE: Comments for this post have been closed.**

Fact: The nerd can’t sew.

Fact: The nerd begs friends to do the sewing for her.

Fact: My blog pal Deanna over at Recycled Lovelies is one of those friends.

It all started with a picture.  See, Deanna is amazing because she takes thrifted clothes straight to her sewing machine and makes them modern again.  She is quite often inspired by the J. Crew catalog.  So I took a little internet vacay to the J. Crew catalog and found this:

And that’s when I decided to challenge Deanna to make this shirt!  (Read her original response here.)

Well, friends, my homegirl not only took up this challenge by making herself this fantastic version of that shirt:

…but she made one for me as well!

BUT WAIT!  THERE’S MORE!

Deanna sweetened the deal by offering to make a special shirt just for one of you lucky nerd readers!!!

Isn’t that freakin’ awesome-and-a-half!?!?!

All you have to do is leave a comment on this page (facebook and twitter don’t count) by 12 noon (central time) this Sunday, March 28th.

Bonus: Leave a comment on Deanna’s blog for a second entry!

The winner (chosen by random.org) will get a shirt in their own size and colors.  Personalization at its best!

Please include the following in your comment:  First name, email address, blog address (if you have one), colors you would like your shirt and flower to be.

Example:Evan, anerdlikeme (at) gmail (dot) com, anerdlikeme.com, Ivory shirt with lavender flowers

On your mark….get set….GO!!!!!

Happy voting nerds!

Not quite sure.

This whole thing I’m doing…

…taking pictures of my outfits.

Its very enlightening.

I’m seeing what doesn’t flatter me.

Like this dress that I fell in love with:

Dress (actually a skirt worn as dress): vintage, thrifted;  Cardi: Dillard’s;  Belt: vintage, thrifted;  Wedges: Target

Occasion: Hot date at Ruth’s Chris with The Hubs.  I got the lobster.

Either this dress is extremely unflattering on my body…

…or I’m just being my own worst critic.

Suggestions?

Puppies!!!

I knew I could drag you in with that title.  But no worries, this post is a double whammy: outfit AND puppies!!!

Cardi: Dillard’s;  Shirt dress (worn as blouse): F21;  Skirt: vintage, Etsy;  Sandals: Shoe Polish;  Necklace: Claire’s;  Cinch Belt: vintage, Ebay

Occasion: Fun day off.  Went to the movies to see “Remember Me.”  Don’t even get me started on it.  I cried at the end.  That’s normal, but this time I was crying because I was mad.  Just go see it, so you can feel my pain too.

The skirt in this outfit is my “new” vintage skirt from Etsy.  Now that I’m wearing it, I’m concerned about how it looks on my body.  I don’t find it very flattering.  And my best girl Billie says the gold sandals don’t work, but they are really all that I have.  Thoughts?  Comments?  Suggestions?

Now, I would like to introduce you to our childrens.  First, there’s Molly.  She’s our youngest child.  Spunky, hyperactive, loudmouthed.  She’s legit, but she doesn’t know when to quit.  I love her.  She’s more fun than you can imagine and waaaaaayyy too cute for her own good.  Oh, and she thinks she’s a cat.

Molly is a Lemon Beagle.  We are typically mutt-lovers, but someone actually paid us to take her.  It was sort of a rescue.  They didn’t have the time to give her the attention she needed.  It didn’t take her long to figure out that she can pretty much get away with murder at our house.  Damn.  How did we let that happen?

Then we have “I’m too good for pictures” Sammie.  She’s not a fan of the camera.  Always looks away.  But what an awesome dog!  She’s our oldest (10 years), but she still looks like a puppy sometimes.  I just love her.  She was a rescue as well…from my own family.  Long story, but she’s been through the ringer and I’m so happy to have her in my life.

Aaaaaand, that’s all folks!

the nerd goes biking…

Boyfriend shirt: Dillards;  Shorts: Old Navy;  Chucks: gifted;  Key necklace: self-made, found in grandparent’s old home

Bike: made by The Hubs

Occasion: A lazy bike ride on a beautiful Sunday afternoon.  Get a tour of Mobile, AL here.

I love the “boyfriend shirt.”  It has replaced the t-shirt, in my opinion.  Not only is it the most comfortable thing I own, but its a pretty stylish way to dress down.  Every girl needs a boyfriend shirt!

And the most worn item of 2009 is…..

Cardi: Target;  Blouse: Etsy, vintage;  Flower pin: F21;  Skinnies: F21;  Wedges: Target

And the most worn item of 2009 is…

THIS SWEATER!!!  I’ve worn this sweater more times than I should admit to, but when you find something you love…well…you wear the hell out of it, am I right?  RIGHT???

And it will probably be pretty up there on the list in 2010 as well.  Just sayin.’  Get used to it.

I absolutely love this vintage blouse!  It has so many colors in the floral pattern, and would go great with pretty much any skirt and sweater.  I dressed it down today for running errands and whatnot.  The only thing that bugs me about it is the excess fabric at the neckline coming out and saying hello to the world.  I used to think I could just play it off as ruffle, but I was totes called out on that today.  Yeah.  Soooooo not ruffle.  I’m gonna have to fix that, pronto.

On those sandy beaches…

Welcome to the “Great Bathing Suit Hunt of 2010.”

This year, I want to purchase a new (or new to me) bathing suit.  I haven’t had a new one in a few years, and now that I’ve discovered my love of 1950s style, I would like that type of bathing suit.  You know, the one piece with boy short type bottoms.  I would prefer black with white polka dots (as seen here), although that design is mainly seen on new “retro” suits.

So here’s my main concern: Based on my New Year’s Resolution, am I allowed to buy a new bathing suit?  What if I find a vintage pattern and have one made?  And finally, how freakin’ adorable are all the ladies in these pictures?!?!?!

With love, Ev

P.S. If you or someone you know can make me a suit or find me a vintage one, I will pay you.  I would rather buy from someone I know than a complete stranger…kinda like buying a hotdog from a local joint instead of Sonic….eeer whatever…

Date night bike ride

Cardi: Dillards;  Tuxedo shirt: vintage, thrifted;  Leggings: Target;  Belt: vintage, thrifted;  Flats: Gap; Fish necklace: vintage, thrifted

Ok, so don’t mix the following:  bicycles, beers, tight belts, and mexican food. You will be in pain!!!  The Hubs and I were both strugglin’ after this week’s date night, but it was totes worth it.

We decided that for this date night, we would ride our bikes to our new favorite mexican restaurant, La Cocina, which is right down the street from our house.  It was a very short ride.  And of course I wanted to look super chic while riding.  What do you think?  Did I pull it off?  (Sorry about the blurry picture.)

This tuxedo shirt was one of my finds at Back In Time last weekend.  Its obviously a men’s shirt, but I love how girly and chic it can become with a cardigan and leggings.  The belt is actually a skinny tie from the 80s.

Happy Saturday everyone!!!

I. Want. These. NOW!!! (UPDATED)

There are two items that I want right now.  The first is allowed, according to my NYR, but the second…well, not so much.

1. Busy Bee Shoppe’s Allison Headband, $30

I love this headband because its a very neutral color and does not stick a foot off the head.  Its more simple.  Just my style.  Of course, I would wear it farther back on the head, not on my forehead, but you get the point.

2. High-Waisted Black Skirt

Photo courtesy of Jessica at What I Wore

I want this exact skirt.  The problem is, I can’t find it in vintage stores, thrift stores, ebay, or etsy.  I’ve been searching for a skirt like this for months now with absolutely no luck.  And because of my NYR, I can’t just go to the store and buy one.  I must find a pre-owned version, even if it has to be hemmed.  PLEASE HELP!  I need one.  NEEEEEED one.  This skirt would be perfect because it can be dressed up or down.  I don’t want one made of jersey fabric, because no matter how nice of a blouse you pair it with, it still won’t be wedding-worthy or cocktail party-worthy.  HELP!  And if you or someone you know can make me this skirt, I definitely will consider that option.

*UPDATE: I just bought the vintage skirt below from etsy…because I finally found something and couldn’t pass it up.  Man I hope it works out!!!

Old Meets New

Cardi: Dillard’s;  Dress: Thrifted;  Belt: Thrifted;  Necklace: Ann Taylor Loft (old merch);  Knee Socks: Target;  Boots: Steven Madden Intyce via Nordstrom

Occassion: Running errands, going to see a movie

First of all, let me just point out that this cardigan is new merch from Dillard’s (the store that I have come to hate).  I know that my New Year’s Resolution forbids me to buy new clothes, but I had a gift card and was determined to use it.  Trust me, it was difficult.  I have spent hours upon hours in that place and finally bought a pair of dress sandals and a couple of cardigans.  I’m allowed to use a gift card and not break my resolution, right???  RIGHT?!?!

The dress and belt were two of my purchases this weekend on our fabulous trip to Pensacola.  I couldn’t wait to wear this dress!  Its actually a button down 1980s maxi skirt that I am wearing as a belted strapless dress with a cardi for modesty (I cover up my arms year round).  The belt is a 1980s skinny tie that I simply tied around my waist.  What a great way to mix old and new items to make a completely new look!  I’m loving this ensemble.  Absolutely loving it!

Now, time to go enjoy the new Percy Jackson movie all by myself on my lazy day off.  I’m really beginning to enjoy going to the movies alone.  Its very relaxing.

SMILES!!!
